Twenty three teams of social innovators from various departments of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile Ife, Osun State, displayed their entrepreneurial ideas when they competed for Hult Prize – a social entrepreneurship award at National Centre for Technology Management of the OAU.
According to its organisers, the rationale behind the event is to engage students in developing fine ideas to solving challenges facing humanity across the world. The contest seeks to breed social entrepreneurs and technology innovators.It was only 23 teams that were selected to compete for the prize out of 40 teams that sent their applications.
The teams presented their ideas before a panel of judges that were selected globally ,l including Adepeju Jayeoba, a project co-ordinator on mother health and childcare, and Abiodun Momodu, who holds PhD in Technology Management.The teams’ ideas were examined based on how sustainable,profit-oriented and how globally relevant they were.Three teams made it to the finals at the very end.
Team Dynamics , which devised gadgets for purifying contaminated water in order to make it safe for drinking emerged winner. Team
Ignatious closely followed while Team Ignite
was the third.The Dynamics Team will represent OAU at the regional contest next May.
Hult Prize was founded by Ahmad Ashkar in 2009 in partnership with the United Kingdom and Bill Clinton’s Foundation. The Hult prize foundation is a platform for budding social entrepreneurs across the world.
