JAW WAR 2017: Tedder Hall Scales Through To The Semi-Finals Despite Defeat To Mellanby Hall.

In a well fought battle between brother halls, Tedder hall lost to Kenneth Mellanby Hall in the quarter final debate of the ongoing Jaw War competition.

The University College Hospital, Oshuntokun Auditorium hosted the event which took place on Friday, 10th November, 2017. In attendance were members of staff and students of UCH as well as other students from the main campus as the University community came to cheer their halls to victory.

The topic of the debates saw, Mellanby hall battle against Lord Tedder hall on the topic: Secondary School leaving certificate; a sufficient qualification for Nigerian legislators? While Alexandra Brown Hall spoke against Queen Idia hall on the topic: Jungle Justice; a deterrent for law offenders? And Queen Elizabeth II hall debated against Nnamdi Azikwe hall on the topic: Infringement of privacy in the interest of national security; justified?

The judges for the event were Mr. Sanmi Abiodun (Chief judge), Mr. Emmanuel Layode and Mr. Shola Adebayo. The speakers were judged on the basis of appearance, delivery, content and facts, persuasiveness, rebuttal, time management amongst others.

The quarter- finals held so many talking points as all speaker made words into weapons of persuasion that left the audience wowed. The session came to an end after all speakers had spilt their words, one of the judges gave few comments on the debates after which the results were announced. One of the speakers, representing Kenneth Mellanby hall, Mr. Adeyemi Idowu, was unsurprisingly declared by the judges as the Best speaker of the day.

Kenneth Mellanby hall had a score of 77.5 defeating Tedder hall who had a score of 71.5%. The debate between Alexander Brown Hall and Queen Idia hall ended with the home team scoring 81.83% to defeat Queen Idia Hall who had 69%. While Queen Elizabeth II hall scored a total of 82.83% to champoin Nnamdi Azikwe hall who scored a total of 68.67%.

The result showed that Mellanby hall, Alexander Brown hall and Queen Elizabeth II hall have qualified for the semi-finals with their Victories while Lord Tedder hall also scaled through to join them as the Best loser of the session.

The draw of the semi-finals revealed that Mellanby hall will battle against Alexander Brown hall, while Queen Elizabeth II hall will slug it out with Lord Tedder hall for a slot in this year’s Jaw War Finals.
