The House Of Representative Intervenes In The Hijab Controversy

Against the backdrop of the stormy controversy that has been caused by Amasa Firdaus(a Unilorin graduate Law Student),the House of Representatives intervened in the controversy over the refusal of the Nigerian Law School to call Amasa who was due to be called into the Bar on December 12 after she insisted on wearing an Hijab.

However, the house of Representatives directed its committees on Justice and Judiciary to investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations to the floor after the issue was raised in the House.Mr Danburam-Nuhu who was speaking on the floor of the house on Tuesday criticised the Law School’s position on the grounds that it infringed on the fundamental rights of Firdaus. He added while arguing on the motion that Firdaus can dress the way she liked subject to the provisions of Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution and besides,Other African Countries were allowed to use Hijab in similar ceremonies.
