At 10:00 pm on Sunday, 19th November, 2017 the vice president of the second republic, Dr. Alex Ekwueme was pronounced dead in a London hospital.
The elder statesman’s death was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Ekwueme family in the early hours of Monday. The Ekwueme’s indigenes of Oko, in Anambra State explained in the statement signed by the former vice president’s brother, and the traditional ruler of Oko, Igwe Laz Ekwueme that the former vice president passed on around 10:00 pm.
The statement read,” Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former vive-president of the federal republic of Nigeria, Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme, GCON. The sad event occurred at the London clinic at 10:00 pm on Sunday, 19th November, 2017.”
The late Dr. Alex Ekwueme was hospitalized in Memfys Neurosurgery Hospital, Enugu for about two weeks after he collapsed in his residence in the independence layout area of Enugu on October 28. The elder statesman who celebrated his 85th birthday on October 10, was said to have been in coma at the point of admission. He was later flown abroad for medical treatment on November 12, the late former vice president was reported to have suffered from a chest infection, according to his family members.
