Eight people were killed and almost a dozen injured near the World Trade Center in Manhattan when a 29-year-old man in a pickup truck drove down a busy bicycle path.
According to news sources, a note, written in English, was found in the truck that said the attack, which unfolded around 3 p.m. on Halloween, was done in the name of ISIS.
The suspect who was identified as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov from Uzbekistan in Central Asia had been living in the US since 2010.
Reports state that he was shot by police and is currently out of surgery.
Prior to the tragic incident, Saipov was reported to be an Uber Driver who had been driving for the company for about six months.
Reacting to the attack, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio during a press conference said, “This was an act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them.”
Meanwhile, Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Twitter that five Argentine citizens were kille along with a Belgian national.
United States President, Donald Trump, reacting to the attack tweeted that the incident “looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person.”
In a later tweet, he wrote, “My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack. God and your country are with you!”
However, investigations have commenced over the potential link between the attack and Extremist groups in Uzbekistan.
